Not fishing for compliments

Social media is a big part of our lives. People are always fishing for compliments. If it’s likes to a photo on Instagram or a video on Youtube. Just a mention a few. But not all of us are ‘victims’ of this popularity contest. Of course, it’s always nice that you get noticed by other people but that’s not the reason you post of social media or in blogging. Having the freedom to post your ideas or showing something to others, if it gets likes or not, is good enough. Social media is for everyone and not only for those who want attention.

Personally, social media hasn’t given me what I hoped for. It’s just been a tool and that’s what it really is. You read about people finding work via social media. Or at least how to get noticed by employers. But I guess it’s just luck and I have none. I mostly use Twitter and Facebook. I don’t really care about other social media platforms. I only use Instagram occasionally because I only have a tablet and isn’t any good. I watch other peoples post but hardly post myself. I tried to post via a computer but I didn’t get any likes so I wonder if anyone even saw it. When I post there I do get some likes but nothing newsworthy.

I prefer blogging over all those social media platforms. Most of them are superficial. In blogging, you can go deeper into your thoughts. My blog isn’t media sexy but it’s not supposed to either. I’ve written about it before but I say it again. I always wanted to have a different blog from the others out there. There is already enough of these food, fashion and lifestyle blogs. I leave those for people who actually know something about it. All kinds of blogs are needed because their written by different people and have different views on the matters. This is my 6th year of blogging. The first year in 2013 was short so I don’t count that. A lot has happened then. Not bad for someone with a “boring life”. I’ve been in WordPress over 10 years which I wrote about the 10 anniversary here. I’ve learned a lot since I started. Went from free to personal plan, is one change. And of course, people have found this blog, so thank you. So blogging has given me so much more than any social media ever have. I don’t need to fish for compliments, I let my writing do the talking.

Abrupt for a moment

did you know text

On Facebook there is a section called ‘Did you know’ There are random questions you can answer. You can also add questions yourself. So if I could abrupt you for a moment. I’ve collected 20 question below. It’s quite long so be prepared. So here we go, as The Joker says in ‘The Dark Knight’

1. The person I’d love to invite to my birthday party is…
Quite convenient because my birthday is in a month. I wouldn’t have a party. Maybe a party for two and that would definitely be with Tom Hiddleston 😉 And/Or Lee Pace.

2. Beard or no beard?
It really depends on the man. I prefer stubble the most though.

3. If I could be famous for anything, it would be…
A web designer or photographer.

4. I’ve never been able to correctly say the word…
Photographer. It always sounds quite awful when I say it out loud. Failure is also a difficult word to pronounce.

5. A dream trip of mine is…
New Zealand. Since I saw Lord of the rings. It’s quite expensive so it might never happen.

6. My favourite sport(s) to watch…
Ice hockey and tennis. I haven’t watched the latter lately though. I’ve seen ice hockey live a lot of times. The atmosphere is amazing.

7. If you want to make me happy, just give me…
Chocolate. Dark mostly would be good. It can be Toblerone or Finnish chocolate from Fazer.

8. I’d love to be an expert in…
I’m not really an expert in anything so it would be nice to be great at something. Probably in web design or something else creative.

9. When I can’t sleep, I think about…
A lot of things which is the reason I can’t sleep

10. I’m a huge fan of…
Music, movies, crime shows, British comedy.

11. I feel faint when…
When I see Tom Hiddleston and Lee Pace. It’s not just their appearance but also their personalities.

12. I deserve the award for…
My tolerance for idiots. They seem to be everywhere.

13. For me, there’s no better therapy than…
Writing. Fiction and blogging. Music is also helpful.

14. My first scare was…
I saw a real moose when I was 2 years old.

15. If I could bring anyone back to life, I would bring back…
My mother and my sister. Things would be different if they had been around a bit longer.

16. Thanks to the Internet, I have been able to…
Meet people from different parts of the world. That’s cheaper than travelling.

17. My hidden talent is…
I can make different sounds and talk in accents. Or some kind of accent that is. It might not sound real but still.

18. The subject that I was bad at in secondary school was…
Math and I still do. I had remedial teaching but that didn’t help much. I have a mild dyscalculia so numbers can be confusing. Especially when it comes to counting. I have to think really hard so I rather not do Math at all because it just stresses me out.

19. If I found myself on a desert island, I would like to be with…
Shall I say it again? OK, Tom Hiddleston and/or Lee Pace.

20. A good excuse for eating ice cream is…
Every excuse is good. I eat ice cream all year around. But of course in the summer when it’s hot, it’s the best reason.

Hidden followers

Sometimes I think social media is useless. I have followers but they seem to be hidden. I rarely get any reaction from followers. It doesn’t matter if it’s Facebook or Twitter, it’s always the same. It’s different with WordPress and I even prefer it because of that. I wonder why do I waste my time on posting on social media. It feels like I’m talking to a wall. My followers post things I don’t care about. I don’t give a toss about who they follow or where they go on holiday. They don’t seem to care about anything I post there. Do they expect me to care about their posts when they don’t even care about mine? I get more reactions from people who don’t follow me.

It feels like I have nothing in common with people I follow. The only thing that we do, is F1. I don’t watch it anymore even if I do know what’s going on in the sport. They are like friends you had in school when you were a kid but when you meet them years later, nothing is the same anymore. I used to read other people’s posts on social media but now I just keep scrolling through them. Facebook has become a bit irritating. When my follower liked someone else’s post, you can see it too. If it’s only a few then it would be alright but there’s a lot of them. I don’t know those people so I don’t want to see who changed their profile photo or who got married. Also when people share articles in a foreign language, I don’t care about it. It’s not my follower’s fault, it’s just the way it works these days.

I see people starting to follow me on Twitter but then unfollow again. What’s the point in that? Did they press the follow button by mistake? Maybe it’s a bot and not real people. If they were real, I would get some reactions. It seems I only attract silent people. I’m trying to post with the attitude that, I’m gonna post things even if no one is seeing it. I don’t post nonsense like a lot of other people do on social media. When people post selfies, I always scroll past them. I don’t care if they’re famous or not. I hate selfies and I avoid them like plague. It’s unbelievable how much crap people post on social media. The best way is to ignore it altogether. I have self-respect and don’t need approval from strangers. If social media died, I wouldn’t miss it. What I would miss, is blogging.

My followers on social media don’t seem to care about my blog. I don’t think sharing on social media helps me to get my blog out there. How many of you have found it through that? I don’t think no one has. Followers come elsewhere. If my blog was a business, it wouldn’t succeed because for me sharing on social media is like being in space, no one can hear you scream. Luckily it’s just a hobby and it’s not relying on followers. It feels like there’s some kind of curse hanging over me. No one is seeing me in real life and no one is seeing me online. People know my existence but they don’t really see me. I don’t take it personally though. I’m used to it. I don’t believe you can get very far by posting things online because there’s so much out there. People are very choosy. They only get interested in shocking news or something that is out of the ordinary. The Internet is mostly for people who like attention and if you nothing special to offer, you’ll be left alone. Fortunately, there are people who don’t need that much popularity. If they can at least please or help one person, that’s enough for them.

I don’t mind hidden followers. If I stopped following people on social media, there wouldn’t be anyone left. I can understand my posts might not be as interesting to others as it is for me. If someone at least once shows some reaction, I don’t use social media in vain. I’m a modest person and I don’t need much to keep me satisfied. I’m one of those who people who’re happy to affect at least one person. If it’s with my writing or my photographs. It also helps me go through life by making someone else happier. It’s cheaper than going to a therapist. You know what they say, if you scratch my back, I scratch yours. That helping itch will never go away.
