Writing fiction is the hardest thing

Especially when it comes to fan fiction. I don’t know how people do it. Continuing a TV series or making up another story about the characters. It’s really difficult. That’s one of the reasons I only write fiction about real people. I did try to write one based on The Hobbit but after that I haven’t even tried. Writing about real people might be weird for some. But I don’t use their personality, just the name. Since I mostly write to myself I don’t really think it might hurt anybody’s privacy and such. Even if I did post online, they would never know. Internet is a big place. My little fictions are not that good that it would get that much attention.

My subject ideas comes from movies or TV. I also get inspirations from actors I like. It just depends who I fancy at the time. Some give me more ideas than others. But what I write about is not the subject in this post.

I’ve always had problems with details. Even in my own language. It’s all in my head but writing them down is the most difficult part. I can never find the right words. If someone tells me to describe a place, I can’t do it. I just don’t like writing in detail. It’s boring and I’m also lazy to do it. My mind is faster than my writing. I could never be a writer. I have no patience whatsoever. Trying to describe your thoughts to others is difficult. I have a story in my head but when I try to write them down, they don’t turn that good. It’s all in my head. If someone read them, they probably wouldn’t see it the way I do. That’s one of the reasons I write for myself. Also because sometimes I write things that I would be too shy to post in public. It’s not that I’m ashamed of my thoughts. On the contrary but people might not understand.

Sometimes when I start with a story, ideas come flooding. When I’m on a roll, I could stay up for hours writing them down. You can’t lose the threads (or the train of thought) to a story just because it’s late at night and you need your beauty sleep. I guess that’s  every writers blessing and a curse. Then there are days when nothing comes out. Then I just forget the story for a while. Ideas come when they do. Sometimes ideas come while I write. I’ve thought about an idea how it goes but then the story changes and it becomes totally a different one.
I usually write with a pencil on a paper first. Lots of it. I’ve noticed when writing on the computer, I don’t get the same writing flow. Writing them by hand first does have it disadvantages though. There’s a lot of papers everywhere (I re-use old one’s so no new papers there) and a lot to transcribe. It also produces a lot of pencil stubs. When you write a lot, your hand gets sore as well.

Every writer (pro or not) has different ways to work. So if there’s any fiction or any other writers out there. What is your process when you write? Do you still use a pencil and paper or has modern technology taken over? Do you plan ahead or do you get ideas while you write like I do? Any tips you can give me to become a better fiction writer?
If you write fan fiction. Do you rewrite your stories or let them be the way you written them the first time? Where do get your inspiration from? How do you actually get the ideas when you continue from a TV series or a movie? Because I can never figure out how people do it, like I mentioned in the beginning of this post. What’s the secret, if any?

Would be interesting to know how other writers work. Just leave a message below. Or if you have something longer to write. Try the Suggestion Box

Weekly Writing Challenge: Flash fiction

I’ve never written flash fiction before. But there’s always the first time. Remember, nothing of this has happened. At least not about the postcard. That’s all made up.

Postcard from Duran Duran

It’s year 2011. I’ve just got a concert ticket to see my favourite band Duran Duran. I’ve never been into big crowds so I’ve never been to a real concert before. But now I’ve decided to go. It’s not everyday your band is coming to your country.

It’s about 2 months to the concert but then something happens. The singer has a throat infection and a few concerts need to be cancelled. What will happen to the concert in my country? It doesn’t look good. The bands Facebook page is keeping the fans updated. More concerts are being cancelled. It really doesn’t look good. If the whole tour is in danger then my first ever concert won’t happen. There is some hope but the lead vocalist’s doctor has said he still need to rest his voice. A singer’s worst nightmare is loosing his/her voice for good. The fans really don’t want that to happen. Me included. If the tour will be cancelled, there’s nothing to be done. There’s still hope. The concert organisers in my country has said people should hold on to their tickets.

A few weeks later the news that the tour in cancelled has become reality. I feel disappointed but it’s for the better. Who knows, maybe one day the band will come here on their new tour. I continued with my life like usual.

A month later something drops in my mail box. There’s an envelope with a stamp with Queen Elisabeth on it. I don’t know anyone from the UK so it must be something important. I open the envelope and in it there’s a postcard with a picture of the band. I have to sit down to read it. A wide smile appear on my face and my eyes light up.

It’s a postcard from none other than Duran Duran. They apologise to me personally and promise to make it up for the fans somehow. I know it’s probably from the HQ but still. The autographs from all the members are real because they’re written with a pen. There’s also a PS. in the end of the postcard. They would send me a surprise later. Even getting a postcard from the band was absolutely amazing. I was forever grateful.

Writing Challenge: Writerly Reflections

I grew up reading books from author Astrid Lindgren. I even did a presentation of her in school once. Books like Ronia the Robber’s Daughter and Pippi Longstocking. The swedish versions. But I have always loved movie versions better. I loved Ronia the Robber’s Daughter. I haven’t actually read the book, our teacher read it out loud in class. The same with Narnia:The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe. I also love The Brothers Lionheart, the movie. That proves why Lord of the rings and The Hobbit movies are my thing. I think my mother read Mio, My Son to me but I don’t really remember the story. Moomin was also a part of my childhood. I’ve read children’s books when I was in school. But I’m always been a lazy book reader. I prefer movie versions. I haven’t even finished Lord of the rings. I’ve tried (twice) but it just isn’t for me. I did manage to read The Hobbit a few years ago though. But that was much easier to read. I prefer reading biographies, nonfiction and books about a movies. Thick books with small fonts are a major turn off.

Writing stories were always my strongest point in school. I got good reviews from the teachers. We were given different titles and the pupils would choose one of them and make up stories. It was kind of fun after you came up with what you wanted to write about. I started to write fan fiction as an adult in English. Some of them I’ve posted on the internet (about Formula One drivers) They are usually about real people, except the stories are made up. I don’t write fiction based on books or movies. I don’t even read those. They are usually slash and I’m not interested in that.
I still have my first ever fan fiction and reading that, boy it was awful. Luckily I only wrote it to myself. I get my inspiration from my crushes. It depends who it is. That’s all I’m gonna say about that 😉

My stories are not good enough to be published. I only write to get the thoughts out of my head. It’s also fun to write when I feel like it. If they are good enough then I might post them on the internet. I write but I don’t call myself a writer. It’s only a hobby and will always remain so.
