So many penchants but so little time

lap top and papersI’m one of those people who can’t decide what I like doing the most. I’ve got so many different things I find enjoyable so I can’t just choose one. In a way, I envy those who only got at least one penchant that they focus on. My mind goes everywhere. That’s one of the reasons why it has taken me so long to find what I want to do for a living. I always wanted to be different. I wanted to have a job where I could express myself. I’ve  looked for things other people thought were impossible. I’ve never been driven by money. It’s good to have but I rather have a job that I like. Life’s too short to do something only because of money. If I have to do something I’m not interested in, I feel trapped and my motivation is low. I’ve had those internships where I had nothing to do and I was bored out of my mind. Anyone could feel the same in that situation. You should do what you like and is good at it. It doesn’t matter what others think.

There is an advantage for liking different things. If you get bored with one thing, you can do another. I for one get bored if I do only one thing. If it’s music taste or movie genre, my likes are wide-ranged. I couldn’t listen to one kind of music style. There are so many good songs so I can’t choose which is my all time favourite. I don’t even know what’s the best band in the world because there’s so many I like. The same goes for artists. It’s easier to choose which ones I don’t like. That’s the same with anything else in life. I usually choose things with feeling. What kind of music I listen or what kind of movie I’m gonna watch depends on my mood. It doesn’t matter what kind of song it is. I can listen to sad songs even if I’m happy. Some might listen to sad songs when they’re sad but I find songs with a positive tune a much better cure. Music has always been a helpful tool for different emotions for me. Laughing also makes me feel better.

I love comedy but not just any kind. I think they used to make much better comedy shows and movies in the past. What you see these days are not funny at all. The only show that I can mention from the 2010’s is ‘The big bang theory‘. Some might not find it funny but that’s their opinion. Maybe ‘Modern Family‘ but I haven’t watched it that much. ‘30 Rock‘ was funny too. It seems that young people find being drunk and act like an idiot, is funny. The funniest comedy shows were made in the 80’s and 90’s. They’re still funny. Good ones will never get old. What you see now, won’t be remembered in 20 years or more. They’re not funny now so they won’t be funny then. I guess all the best ideas are already done. At least you can watch the oldies on DVD’s or online streaming. There’s just so many good ones but so little time.

If I had to choose just one penchant, then it would be writing. Not only blogging but also writing in general. It has always been a part of me since the day I learned to spell. I had my first diary at 7 but then it was just scribbling. Writing is easier than talking. When you write you have time to think. You can always come back to it and add things. But when you talk to someone, you can’t get it back or you forget to say something. I think before I speak and even then the words don’t come out the way I thought in my head. Afterwards, I wish I had said those things and it torments me a few days. Writing can also be a disadvantage. People can misunderstand you and it’s more difficult to write the exact thoughts in words. Writing emotions or sounds in words is most difficult. In any language. I sometimes struggle with that and try to find an answer on the internet. Then it frustrates me when I can’t find the answer. Those are probably the only downsides to it. Other times, writing is fun and a great distraction from other daily things. We all need an escape from time to time and writing is mine.

Robbie Williams really delivered once again

Yesterday I went to my first ever live gig, Robbie Williams. If someone gives awesome delivery, it’s him. He’s Robbie “F@cking” Williams (his words) after all. I’ve only seen him live in the movie theatre. He’s always been a great entertainer. He’s just awesome and funny too. The atmosphere was great. People singing along and cheering as loud as they can. Finns really love him and it’s mutual. He was surprised people knew the words to ‘Love my life’ which is a new song. During that, people had red hearts or anything red in their hands. That was arranged by a Finnish radio station. Everyone should bring something red with them and show them during the song. He was really impressed about that. That was our surprise to him.

Songs that were played were e.g. Party like a Russia, Kids, Love my life (obviously) and Millenium. He paid tribute to George Michael by singing “Freedom” That was Robbie’s first single. I know the lyrics by heart so I sang along. Then there was “Angels” of course. It’s compulsory in his concert. It’s an amazing feeling hearing people singing along and the sea of lights in the audience. Beautiful.
One of the best things was when his father performed a song. His absolutely brilliant. We know where Robbie has got his performing talents. His dad is also a performer. He sang and told jokes on stage as well.
There was a little sing along when Robbie sang part of older hits from other artists. One of them was “Don’t you want me” by Human League. Even a song from his Take That years. The chorus to “Never forget” There’s a lot of clapping at the end of that song. He mentioned Bruce Springsteen and imitated him a bit. Apparently “The Boss” sings Robbie songs in the karaoke. Robbie is really good at rapping and the song “Rudebox” has it. I haven’t listened to that song in ages and it sounds even better live. It went straight to my heart.

Robbie has a great way of connecting with the audience. Flirting if you like. Maybe that’s one of the reasons girls want to get close to the stage. One young woman was picked up from the audience to sing with him. It’s was absolutely brilliant. She put on a mask where you could only see her eyes. Then they sang “Something stupid” but she wasn’t actually singing. I guess it was someone from the band. Only the mouth of the mask was moving. The voice was kind of deep which was the funny part. What a lucky lady she was. She got a kiss on her cheek and she took a selfie of them both. That sure was something she could remember the rest of her life. Another woman got his attention as well. She had sat on someone’s shoulders and he said “Maybe you’re that tall or you’re sitting on someone shoulders” He started to sing “She’s the one” to her.

After the encore, the last song was Frank Sinatra’s “My way” It was a perfect ending. This experience I’ll treasure the rest of my life. If I had the money I would go and see more of his concert. Even though I had to stand up almost the whole concert, it was all worth it. Who could sit still anyway? I’m usually shy when it comes to public gatherings but now I was like any other there. I didn’t dance but at least stomped and clapped besides the singing along. There were 30 500 people watching but yet getting out of the stadium went smooth. There were a lot of entrances so it helped a lot. This concert was the one I’ve had been waiting for and it’s definitely the best experience I’ve ever had. The weather was good too so it couldn’t have ended better.

Symphony for my ears

Not only the voices of actors Benedict Cumberbatch, Tom Hiddleston and Lee Pace are a symphony for my ears but also music. My taste is wide-ranged and listens to a lot of different styles. However, there are certain and bands that are closer to my heart. I’m not that into these new artists even though the likes of Adam Lambert and Kelly Clarkson is quite high on my list. But they don’t give me the same feeling older ones get. Most of the bands and artists I like are still making music. Instead of making a list of all my favourites, I’m gonna mention a bit more of my most precious likes.

Duran Duran
I’ve mentioned this band in my older posts. I’ve liked them since the 80’s. They’re from Birmingham, England and they’ve been around since 1978 so it’s gonna be 40 years next year. They’ve changed its members a few times and some have come back. They still going strong despite all the problems. That’s saying a lot about them. They made great music in the 80’s and they still got it. They have so many great songs, I can’t choose one. They released their latest album ‘Paper Gods’ in 2015. They’re on tour right now but unfortunately not even close to Scandinavia. No one knows how long they will be touring so they probably won’t come to Finland. I really hope they do because in 2010 their concert got cancelled and that would have been my first ever concert. Going to see them live abroad is too expensive for me. Unless I win the lottery but that will never happen. Every song they’ve recorded makes me feel better. When my mother died, their music helped me get through my sorrow.

Bon Jovi
Like with Duran Duran, I’ve also liked them since the late 80’s. I think ‘Living on a Prayer’ from the ‘Slippery when wet’ album was the first song I heard and that was in 1986. My friend taped me their album ‘Keep the faith’ but I’ve never bought their albums. Their latest is called ‘This house is not for sale’ which is the first one I bought. I listened to it every day since it was released in 2016, that’s how much I love it. My favourite song of them of all time is, ‘You gave love a bad name’ You really don’t need to buy albums anymore because of Spotify but I actually prefer them. I’m not always online and a band like them, old school is always the best. They’ve been to Finland a lot of times which proves how popular they are here.

Take That
They were the first band that I became a big fan of. They’re from Manchester, England. I bought all their albums and watched their videos. I have a lot of VHS tapes that I recorded from different interviews and TV appearances. They’re really funny which is one of the reasons why I loved them so much. They split up in 1996 but reunited 10 years later as a 4 piece. Now they’re a trio and still sell millions in their country of UK. I don’t own their latest albums but I listen to them online from time to time. I’ve seen their concert in the movie theatre but that’s the closest I ever got. I’ve seen them live on TV before. They still sound great live. They also have so many great songs I can’t choose which one I love the best.

Robbie Williams
Next Thursday one of my dreams will come true. I’ll attend my first ever concert and he gets the honour so to speak. I’m very excited about this I can hardly contain myself. He was a member of Take That in the 90’s. He’s been through a lot but pulled through. He’s one of the best selling artists in the world and now I’m going to see him play live. The only time I’ve seen him live was in the movie theatre but it wasn’t enough to feed my needs. My favourite song is ‘Strong’ because he really is strong and it’s a couraging to all of us. His music gets right to my soul. I can’t really explain the feeling his music gives me. As I write this, I listen to his latest album ‘The heavy entertainment show‘ on Spotify. He’s getting better as the years go by. He as a person is also great. He was so funny when he was in Take That and that humour is still there. That’s one of the reasons why he’s so well liked.

Michael Jackson
He really was the King of Pop. He made great music and his dancing was amazing. A lot of artists have him as a hero and so is he to me. He was not only a great entertainer but he cared a lot about the world. I was really sad when he passed away. No matter what people think of him, without him there wouldn’t be other artists. He was an inspiration to everybody. My favourite song is ‘The way you make me feel’ because of the beat. It’s really amazing how many people can make the moves he made. I’ve seen his live performances on TV and there’s a lot of those videos on Youtube. He really made a real impact in pop culture and he should always be remembered as a great musical genius.

Madonna
She’s my female hero. Like with Michael, she’s an inspiration to many. She never cared what others think of her. She’s never been afraid to be different. That’s what I most admire about her. I wish I could be as brave as her. She’s a pioneer and she’s proved that a woman can do things men can do. Like with some other artists and bands I’ve mentioned, I liked her music since the 80’s. My favourite song from that area is ‘Who’s that girl?’ Honestly, her older songs are better than the one in 2000’s. Even though I like some of her newer stuff as well. I don’t only like her music but also as a person. She’s really caring about the world and her children are very important. She’s open- minded and she’s showed the world you’re worth the same no matter what sexuality or colour you are.

So there you have it. I have so many other favourites but those are the most loved. Any kind of music is a symphony for my years but pop and rock are number one. I couldn’t live without music. If I only had one reason to live, it would be that one. It will never die even if the person does. Some become classics and still sound great after decades but some will be forgotten. I’m not judging but what people listen to these days are appalling but each to their own. New bands and artists come and go but music, in general, will always remain.
