Not going with the flow

passenger in bus

I’m one of those people who doesn’t follow fashion or the latest trends. As a woman, people expect that from you. But like my blog address says; Tomboy for life. I hate that girly stuff and if people can’t accept that then it’s too bad. I follow my own path. I didn’t rebel when I was a teenager but rebel now against all these stereotype things. I rather be the driver of my life than the passenger. I’m not here to please people. I dare to be different. People expect you to go with the flow and be like everyone else. You should like the same movies or the same music like everyone else. If you’re single you should live like in Sex in the City. You should dress in a certain way because of your gender. If you’re not like everyone else, they call you names or look at you strangely. People are too attached to looks. They judge you by just looking at you instead of getting to know the person. If you look at a person you can’t know what they’re really like. Even if you know a person, you can’t know everything about them. You only know them what they tell you.

I’m a big music lover and one of my favourite music is mainstream. But what they have these days on the charts, it’s something I don’t care about. I don’t know half of those bands or artist you see these days. I listen to those who’s been around for years. They know how to make music and it’s up to date. I used to follow the music business and knew about the latest hits. Now I just don’t care anymore. I don’t know what kids know about music history but if you don’t even know any a singers from the past, then what kind of music lover are you. When I was that age, I knew about the music my parents listened to when they were young. Now if it’s a band or singer who was popular 15 years ago, kids don’t know them. If they listen to old music they laugh or think it sounds awful. Music knowledge should be taught in school. If there weren’t The Beatles, Rolling Stones etc, there wouldn’t be any of the current ones. Things haven’t changed since I was a teenager. Then they listened to music that was on the charts and when new ones came, the old ones were forgotten. I was never one of those teens who changed music tastes every week. I still listen to some of the bands and singers I listened to then. You don’t see their music on the latest charts even if they have released new material. Duran Duran is one of them. Kids these days don’t know what good music is anymore.

I’m also a movie lover and I watch movies that I think is interesting. I don’t go and see a movie because it’s popular. Some years there’s not much I want to see. But years like this one there’s been a lot of interesting movies. I’ve seen at least 3 movies in the cinema this year. There’s two more and they’re Thor and Star Wars. I was actually not very interesting in them when they were trendy. I still don’t care about certain Marvel movies but I’ve watched Thor and Doctor Strange on blu-ray. I’m so called late bloomer when it comes to those movies. If the characters were played by other actors, I probably wouldn’t care about them as much as I do now.

I never do things rationally. If I decide something I think long and hard if it’s worth it. The only time I went with the flow was starting this blog. I’ve always written something and when I started, I was never afraid to start one. I wish I could make easy decisions like that in other things as well. I’m my own driver of my own life. If passengers wants to get on board, they’re more than welcome.

Advent Calendar, Day 23

red Christmas balls
©Mia Salminen, Kamppi shopping center, Helsinki 2014

Today it’s Christmas Eve Eve and this advent calendar is coming to an end. First of all, thank you all for the likes and comments. I really appreciate them all. Secondly, there’s not much left of the year 2016. Personally my year has been quite eventful which is something that doesn’t happen every year. I’ve also discovered things I didn’t expect I would. I made a list of what I discovered this year.

Learn new things
I started studying web design. At first I was really exited but as the year passed, I notices coding is a pain for me. No matter how many times I tried to practise, I didn’t learn it. I’ve been so frustrated and wanted to quit so many times. My teacher said if I practise and practise, I learn but what’s the point when it only makes me upset. You should like to practise what you do. On the job learning I told my client about my troubles with coding but luckily he fully understood. I did what I could. The client was satisfied with all the work I did do. The planing is something I’m better at. I did a logo and a banner so I used my graphic design knowledge. Sometimes things you’ve learned in the past do come in handy.

Winning a fear
It’s not really a fear but I’ve never been brave. In school I was always a listening student. As an introvert, speaking up in class was never easy. Even if I did know the answer, I still wasn’t brave enough to speak. In the school I’m studying right now, I’m been much more talkative. I’ve asked questions and so on. I think I’m not afraid to speak up is because we’re only about 7 students so it’s easier. I always liked small groups. The older I get, less I think about what others might think. If I screw up something, I just move on. It always wasn’t so. I wouldn’t want to go back in time and live my teens again. I lacked confidence and unsecure around other people. It’s much easier now and it has taken a lot of time to get here.

Blogging
I made a new blog about my web design studies. At first I thought I could handle two blogs but I was wrong. I haven’t had the energy to write so it has been rejected for a while now. I can’t spend my time blogging all day so something must give. The reason I started that blog was to keep up with my studies. More of a diary thing. It’s interesting to know what I was thinking and went through. Usually there’s a lot of things stored in my brain but like computers, you need to empty the hard drive from time to time. I will still have that blog even if I only post there less than in this blog.

Movies
I’m a very late bloomer when it comes to Marvel movies. I haven’t really been interested in those before. Movies like ‘Thor’ and ‘The Avengers’. I loved ‘Guardians of the galaxy’ but that as far as it goes. I’m still not interested in Marvel movies in general. I don’t care about ‘X-men’, ‘Superman’ and whatever the names are. Even if I did see ‘Superman vs Batman’ but that was only because of the latter and I wanted to see how Ben Affleck did his version of him.
There’s reason why my sudden interest in certain Marvel movies has arisen and the reason is Tom Hiddleston. I never thought I would watch Thor and actually liking them. The first one was a bit lame but it did have great special effects. The second was better but you should watch ‘The Avengers’ first because then you understand it better. That’s the problem with Marvel movies, there’s too many characters you have to keep up with. Then they make different movies of them too. ‘The Avengers’ is actually the 2nd ‘Thor’ movie. Damn Loki, his everywhere. But ooh so sexy.

A new crush
What a difference a TV series makes. I’ve never seen anything with Tom Hiddleston before until now. I didn’t think much of him since I didn’t watch those movies. To make a long story short, I watched ‘The Night manager’ and boom, I was ‘in love’ You know when you’re a kid and the parents tell you not to touch the stove or put your tongue on an icy surface but you still do it. The same when someone says, don’t look at him/her for too long or you might fall for them. Maybe I’m a bit superficial here but he’s just so pretty it hurts. Plus those amazing eyes and that voice. Is it getting hot in here? 😀 He’s not just a pretty face though.

Icehockey
I loved ice hockey as long as I remember. I usually watch world champion and big tournaments like that. But this year I discovered I love it even more. I went to a few matches in the Finnish league. One of the tickets I won in an Instagram competition. Nothing is better than seeing it live. It’s not a cheap thrill and I’m not really crazy about the travel to the matches. Being there supporting your team in person and feeling the atmosphere is one of the best feelings in the world.

Never sated enough

rubels

No matter how much you tell yourself material things doesn’t matter, it actually does. Only if you live in poverty, you realise you can live without it. I just don’t want to be in that situation. I have never had lot of money nor my parents. I learned to save. I can thank mother for that. I only buy things that I actually need and can afford. But you never know when you don’t have money. Bad luck can strike anyone so it’s better to be safe than sorry.

Recently I have spent too much money on material things and that concert ticket. But I’ve only bought things at discounts but that’s still not cheap. I never liked shopping in stores so online shops are heaven. I mostly buy music and movies. Sometimes t-shirts but that as far as clothes go. I rather buy them in stores than online. I still buy CD’s and DVD which I’m never sated enough of. I actually prefer watching movies from a disk. Earlier this year I bought a player where you can watch both Blu-ray and DVD’s. I don’t see the difference between them. I think they quality is the same. But that’s not the reason I buy Blu-ray. Because sometimes there are more extras in them than on DVD’s. They’re more expensive but not that much. Besides they always go on sale half price when the movies gets older.

Right now I got 62 DVD/Blu-ray altogether if you don’t count TV series and extended versions. That’s a whole other list. I’ve seen almost all expect the latest I bought recently. If you look at the list I made in IMDB, the 6 last items are new. Two of them are Swedish movies I watched when I was a kid. You can tell a lot about a person what kind of movies they watched. I have quite a lot of fantasy and action/drama movies because I’m always been fascinated by them since I was a child. Maybe that’s one of the reasons I have a good imagination. It’s not from books for sure since I don’t read them that much. I prefer movies. Some of the DVD’s I own are movies I’ve seen on the movie screen.

But then there are movies I’ve never seen but yet I bought them. Why you ask? The reason is the actor. I usually don’t choose movies to watch by looking who’s in it even if it helps. But this certain British actor, what words should describe it, melted my heart. No it’s not Benedict Cumberbatch even though I like him a lot too.
It’s Tom Hiddleston. I’ve never seen any movie he’s been in. No even Thor and those Marvel movies. The only thing I’ve seen him in The Night manager mini series. I wouldn’t say it was the greatest but not bad either. The reason why I watched it was because Hugh Laurie was in it. But Tom was a gorgeous bonus. Which he is. Actually he’s the inspiration to my poem Smokin’ hot. Don’t think I only go for his looks. I’m sure his acting skills are great too. I only have to watch these movies before I can judge. Honestly I didn’t even think much of him before until I saw the TV series. It takes a while for me to like something and when it does strike, there’s no turn back.

There are things money can’t buy. You don’t get sensible money spending until you learn the value of money. Only spend what you can afford. The problem begins when you loan money from the bank and you can’t pay it back. You can’t buy common sense and that’s the most important thing no matter what you do in your life. If you don’t have that, no wonder people have debts up to their necks. As long as I have money, I’m sated. With that thought. I won’t be buying anymore DVD’s or anything else for that matter in a long time. There are more important things to pay than material things.
